Arranger, publisher, brass specialist

Mike TubaFor 40 + years, I was a freelance tubist and bass trombonist in the Denver area, performing primarily as principal tuba of the Boulder Philharmonic, Central City Opera Orchestra, the Colorado Ballet Orchestra, and Opera Colorado.  I’ve played over 300 performances of the Lion King and over 700 performances of the Nutcracker – still love them both.

From 1990 – 2004, I also served on the faculty of the University of Colorado Boulder as instructor (and later assistant professor) where I taught tuba, euphonium, brass chamber music, instrumentation, theory, music appreciation, and business of music.  I performed with the Dallas Brass (1988) and the Aries Brass Quintet (1986 – 1989), and have also performed along with the Canadian Brass, Summit Brass, and the brass ensemble of the Grand Teton Music Festival. I was formerly the music director and artistic director of the Denver Brass (1987 – 1991).

I am no longer playing or teaching.

The Boulder Brass was founded in 1994 where I was principal tuba and still am the music director and general manager. I recently stepped down as President of Local 20-623 of the American Federation of Musicians, the Denver Musicians Association and am now living in Florida and happily working full time on my various brass ensemble projects.

I have written and published over 400 arrangements for brass quintet and brass ensemble (423.11) and, more recently, large brass ensemble.  My arrangements have been performed and/or recorded by the Canadian Brass, Summit Brass, the New York Philharmonic, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Netherlands Philharmonic Brass, the Concertgebouw Orchestra Brass, Grand Teton Music Festival, and the Burning River Brass, to name a few.

I was also a music copyist in high demand having worked for the Moody Blues, Three Dog Night, Michael Bolton, Al Jarreau, Kansas, the Paul Winter Consort, and others; my work in this area has been on the stands at the Boston Pops and the London Symphony (and countless others).

In 2008, I was thrilled when Chuck Daellenbach of the Canadian Brass asked if they could record some of my arrangements. There are three pieces on their Legends CD and one piece on their Bach CD.  They have used my arrangement of Bach’s Air pour les Trompettes as their ‘sit down’ show opener since that time. Summit Brass has also recorded some of my arrangements on Toccata and Fugue, Summit Brass Live and A Summit Brass Night. The Burning River Brass out of Cleveland has recorded many of my arrangements – some written especially for them – on Of Knights and Castles and Russian Carnival.  There are many more representative recordings including, of course, recordings by the Boulder Brass.

  1. I am a huge fan of your arrangements, and my brass ensemble owns many of your transcriptions including the Pines of Rome and the Alpine Symphony. I was wondering if your transcriptions of an English Folksong Suite and American the Beautiful were available for sale, I do not see them on any other websites.

    • Hi David,

Thanks for the very nice words – I appreciate it.

I never published my arrangement of the Vaughan Williams. It still exists in manuscript form, but I just never got around to committing it to Finale.

I applied for a license to publish my transcription of Carmen Dragon’s setting of America the Beautiful but was told by the estate that they simply do not grant licenses to publish other versions of his arrangements. Alas, it’s one of my favorites.

      Thanks again – Mike
